Some of my winter work – a relatively straight forward beech hedge that had become a row of trees! and a gappy thin hawthorn hedge that Ive layed and replanted the gaps.

Ive updated the dry stone walling page with some of the walling Ive done over the winter (not the best time for walling!!) Ive been busy with hedgelaying too. Most of the winter work was above Todmorden/Cornholme – very beautiful but a bit bleak in the sideways rain and hail.
I’ve added some new images to the site. Recent commissions include 2 wedding arches, a log store and three gates. I’ve been busy hedge laying – picture shows 28ms of hedge layed in Lancashire & Westmoreland style (stakes every 3ft) Its a style that means the hedge is stock proof (its a sheep hedge) straight away. In this one I only had to add in one piece of brash (at the very end).
I’ve just started a big walling job too – various repairs (gapping up) rebuilds etc.
Quick post… delivered some hedge laying training at Dewsbury Country park for Kirklees council. Was a lot of fun with lovely sunny weather. Pictures to follow but for now here is a link to pictures on Dewsbury Country park’s facebook page.
A busy weekend of demonstrating tool handle making at Penistone Agricultural Show (Pics to follow) and demonstrating hedge-laying at Guisborough Forest Festival. (pics to follow) Both were busy with a lot going on that I didn’t get to see!. I met a couple of old boys who still layed hedges – “to stop it being too draughty for the sheep”
Only managed 5m of hedge all day! so must have talked to a few people!!
A recently completed fence and gate commission. The client liked the tall posts – I was going to cut them down to the same height as the fence!.
Been meaning to post this picture for a while – it is a over grown part coppiced/low pollarded part laid ‘hedge’ near Dent (one of my favourite places). Around there most of the hedges are managed which is great to see.
I have a stall at the SCN event in Uppermill over the May Bank holiday (3rd, 4th, 5th May) Come along if you are in the area. I now have BBQ Charcoal in stock.
I’ve added some more pictures to the ‘Hedges’ page from this winters work – I laid and/or restored approx 200m of mainly mixed thorn hedge and planted another 250m of hedge over the winter months.
As well as completing the Standedge hedge Ive been busy restoring another large hedge. This time it involved laying a bit, coppicing a bit and planting 320 hawthorn, blackthorn, crab apple and dog rose in the gaps. It was a tough one trying to find time inbetween overnight frosts to plant/lay.
Ive just made and sold a lot of this type of furniture, its fun to make with prices ranging from £15 – £35. get in touch if you would like any (its made to order at the moment)
And finally me and my sandwich board off to Slaithwaite Country Show. I couldnt get the car out or get to my stock to have a full stall.
